Five attempted murder, arson suspects sent to criminal court

Five attempted murder, arson suspects sent to criminal court

The five suspects from Syria arrested in connection with the attempted murder and arson in Pyla last month were on Friday sent to a trial before the Larnaca criminal court.

The suspects are a 17-year-old who allegedly shot against the security guard, a 23-year-old who allegedly set fire to the cars, a 17-year-old who is believed to have been driving the getaway car, a 27-year-old who seems to have given the perpetrators in, and a 44-year-old convict at the central prisons who is believed to be the mastermind.

An 18-year-old from Romania who had also been arrested and who admitted to stealing the green car allegedly used in the crime, has not been included in the indictment. He was, however, charged with other thefts of cars in Limassol and Paphos.

At around 4am on August 14, four cars were set on fire at the premises of a car rental office on the Larnaca-Dhekelia coastal road in Pyla.

Investigations later revealed that two individuals arrived in a vehicle, poured flammable liquid over the cars and set them on fire.

Although no one was injured during the incident, a security guard who was on duty at the scene reported hearing gunshots.

The five Syrians appear to be members of a notorious network that was preparing a series of crimes and will be facing heavy charges, including conspiracy for murder and attempted murder.

Police investigations are ongoing and further arrests cannot be ruled out.

Sources said that the investigators have decided to send the five to trial, as some of the suspects have admitted to the crimes and the green getaway car has been found.

Test results on four firearms found in a shed in Denia are pending and may be linked to this case and possibly others.

Meanwhile, the British bases police are investigating the possible involvement of the suspects in another arson case, where the car of an elderly man was set on fire about a fortnight ago in Dasaki Achnas.
