The government of Benin has announced that the country's armed forces have thwarted a coup attempt.
At least 8 soldiers, several of them carrying weapons, went on the country's state television and claimed to have seized power.
They even reported that their leader, Colonel Tigri Pascal, overthrew democratic institutions, suspended the implementation of the constitution and closed Benin's air, land and sea borders.
The country's authorities arrested 14 people in connection with the coup attempt.
The attempted coup in the West African country is the latest threat to democratic governance in the region, where the military has seized power in countries including Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Mali.
