The editor of the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, Ozay Sendir, published a resonant article entitled “Cables and weapons are preparing the ground for the coming war in Cyprus,” in which he claims that the likelihood of conflict between Turkey and the Republic of Cyprus is “dangerously increasing.”
According to Sendir, tensions are increasing not only due to Israeli arms supplies to Greek Cypriot forces, but also due to the influence of radical movements and “paramilitary groups”, which he claims has been increasing in the Republic of Cyprus since 2010. He also claims that "control of the church" has allegedly passed to Israel - a claim that has not yet been confirmed by any independent sources.
“Israel has long been trying to provoke Turkey into interfering in the affairs of the Eastern Mediterranean,” writes Sendir. – “Financing the Greek-Cypriot power grid, arming Greece, undertaking all sorts of maneuvers to limit and embarrass Turkey. For Israel, Türkiye is the only obstacle. Cyprus can be used as an instrument of pressure.”
He also argues that such actions could cross the boundaries of normal diplomatic tensions and “escalate into provocations aimed at inciting conflict in Cyprus.”
The article caused a wide resonance in Turkish media and social networks, however, there were no official comments from the authorities of Turkey, Israel or the Republic of Cyprus at the time of publication.
The Milliyet newspaper began publishing in Istanbul on May 3, 1950.
