The Council of Ministers decided to support professional farmers, with a fund that comes from the savings of the Department of Agriculture.
Speaking to the Morning Itinerary, the secretary general of the Panagrotic Union of Cyprus, Christos Papapetrou, welcomed the event, noting that the plan concerns subsidizing the consumption of electricity, from July 2024 to August 2025.
He explained that the subsidy will be calculated based on the kilowatt hours consumed in rural tariff accounts and the amounts will be credited directly to the electricity bills of the beneficiaries at the Electricity Authority.
According to Mr. Papapetrou, the aid was necessary as producers shouldered exorbitant energy costs due to high temperatures and increased irrigation needs.
At the same time, he emphasized that the utilization of photovoltaics remains limited, explaining that in many areas the electricity grid cannot support the installations.
