Poetry festival set to move Nicosia

The Poetry Moves International Festival, which was successfully held for the first time last year in Nicosia, is about to make its 2024 return. A multidisciplinary arts festival with poetry at its core, the upcoming edition will highlight poetry, literature and the arts, looking at their intersection and coexistence.

The Poetry Moves International Festival 2024 opens on October 9 at MS Viewpoint Studios in Nicosia, with the inauguration of a double photography exhibition: the solo exhibition Views from the Window by Nelly Tragousti (Greece/Germany) and the exhibition PhOETRY II, featuring the 30 photographs selected from the global open call competition of the festival.

Marking the 50th anniversary of the invasion and occupation of Cyprus, and as humanity experiences vast humanitarian crises, wars, violence and persecutions leading to an unprecedented rise in displacement, the festival has chosen world poetry under the theme Windows as its focal point.

“Windows,” explain organisers, “as motifs and sources of light, represent hope, contemplation or melancholy, symbolising both protection and isolation, while simultaneously opening up, acting as a threshold between inside and outside, between two worlds.”

A series of performances and events will be held between October 9 and 24. Besides the two exhibitions, poetry readings and recitals will be on, a poetic jazz showcase, performances by Cypriot composers with pieces inspired by poems as well as dance solos. The events will be held at different locations around Nicosia, specifically at Eleftheria Square, Arte Music Academy and Egomio Cultural Centre.
