This evening, the center of Limassol turned into an arena of violent clashes between fans of local football clubs AEL and Apollo.
According to the police, at approximately 00:30 a group of 15-20 masked AEL fans launched a planned attack on the Apollo club office, located on the busy Mesolongiou street.
Course of events:
The attackers used incendiary mixtures and stun grenades. Apollo defenders, who were expecting an attack, met the enemies with iron rods and stones. 11 parked cars were damaged in the shootout - broken windows, signs of arson. Both sides used homemade shields from garbage cans.
Current situation:
The Cyprus police are conducting a special operation “Derby” with the involvement of rapid response units. Already found:
– 3 abandoned jackets with AEL symbols
— Homemade device for throwing bottles
— Recordings from CCTV cameras, where 2 cars with painted over license plates are visible
Experts note that this is the most violent clash between fans in the last 3 years. The authorities are considering a temporary ban on away matches for both teams.
